Hillcrest and Peoria Richwoods will meet this afternoon in the IHSA Class 3A state championship game. Hillcrest stunned #1-ranked, and defending 3A champion Champaign Centennial to advance, while Richwoods held off Chicago Marshall to move into the title game.

Hillcrest avenged a 81-64 February defeat to Champaign Centennial in impressive fashion behind a terrific all-around effort from senior guard Eric Gaines (Kent State). Gaines scored 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead Hillcrest to the 49-42 win. Jeremiah Horne, Herbert Offord and Julius Brown also factored big in the second half to push Hillcrest into the 3A title game.

Peoria Richwoods pulled away to a double-digit advantage on Chicago Marshall, and was then able to withstand a furious Marshall rally to hold on for a 67-61 win. Senior forward Tony Frazier led Richwoods with 22 points and 14 rebounds while battling a talented Marshall frontcourt. Senior guard Tylon Deal and senior forward T.J. Cole backed up Frazier with 14 and 12 points respectively as they rolled into the title game.

Perhaps it is fitting that Hillcrest and Richwoods, the only teams to defeat defending Class 3A state champion Champaign Centennial this year, will meet for the 3A state championship. Hillcrest will look to take Richwoods out of their offensive flow with their pressure defense. Richwoods will draw upon their talent and experience to win one final game.

The IHSA Class 3A state championship game will tip-off at 2:00 immediately following the Chicago Marshall/Champaign Centennial third-place game which will tip-off at 12:15 p.m.
