Illinois Bobcats Beginning To Find Their Stride On The Basketball Court After Playing Out A Full Travel Schedule This Spring
The Illinois Bobcats have put in some major miles on the road this spring, and now, with the addition of Madison (WI) Memorial star Jeronne Maymon, have put up a pair of impressive showings in their last two tournaments.
The Bobcats opened the spring at the ChicagoHoops.com Spring Tip-Off Classic at the end of March. They then competed at the Swish & Dish in Milwaukee, Wisconsin ahead of going to the Real Deal on the Hill in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and then the King James Shooting Stars Classic in Akron, Ohio.
The Bobcats have done their best work on the basketball court over the course of the past two weekends. The team opened the month of May by knocking off a highly regarded The Family team in overtime at the Spiece Run N' Slam ahead of advancing to the Sweet 16 of the event.
This past weekend, the Bobcats knocked off the Spiece Rising Stars, and advanced to the Final Four of the GBOA North Tournament before falling to Team Detroit. The Bobcats made it to the Final Four despite being without both Robert Covington (Proviso West) and Tim Johnson, a pair of key contributors.
The Bobcats have been led by their bruising and athletic 6-6 frontcourt duo of Jeronne Maymon and Michael Haynes. Maymon rates as one of the top 2009 prospects in the country. DeShawn Dockery (Hillcrest) and Derrius Walker (Rich South) anchor the backcourt.
Tobias Walker of the Illinois Bobcats said, "The more we play together, the better we get. We have played against some top competition. The guys are getting hungry. We know we can compete." Walker went on to say that his squad is now learning how to finish off tournaments, and is encouraged to see his team now take losing a game just as hard as he does.
The Bobcats will be in action at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in North Carolina the weekend of May 24th, ahead of playing full July schedule including the ChicagoHoops.com Chicago Summer Classic.
