Brian Stinnette's News And Notes From High School Basketball And The College Basketball Recruiting Trail
Purdue-bound Class of 2008 Decatur Eisenhower star Lewis Jackson is just fine after being rushed to the hospital by ambulance late Friday night after scoring 29 points and leading his team to a win over Bloomington. Jackson experienced chest pains during the game, and collapsed after the game. According to the Decatur Herald & Review, a battery of tests determined that he was suffering from pleurisy, which is an inflamation of the pleural cavity around the lungs. The bottom line is that Jackson is just fine, and even went out on Saturday night and scored 22 points en route to being named MVP of the game as Eisenhower topped Christian County at the Vandalia Shootout. Wow!
Class of 2011 Thornton star Jay Parker is continuing to put up big numbers since being brought up to the varsity from Thornton's sophomore squad. Parker, a 5-10 point guard, scored another 25 points in the Wildcat's loss to Chicago Crane.
St. Louis University has taken up more than just a passing interest in high-scoring Alton guard Ruben Cotto.
James Wilhelmi of Howard University is a real good dude.
Strong prospects continue to emerge in the Illinois Class of 2011. Add 6-3 freshman shooting guard Jakob Junis of Rock Falls to the list of emerging players. On the season, Junis is the second-leading scorer for Rock Falls with an average of about 10 points per game. He put up another 19 points last Friday night on 8-10 shooting from the floor including 3-5 from behind the three-point arc. Rock Falls could be on the verge of a special backcourt for the next few years with Junis, and his backcourt running mate Tevin Rumley.
6-9 junior post Zeke Schneider of Metamora is beginning to open a lot of eyes with his play on the basketball court. A true post with excellent size and fast-developing game, Schneider is starting to post hefty numbers for Metamora, and is set to add some nice depth to the available post prospects in the Illinois Class of 2009.
Former Rich Central star Jarvis Walker is having a strong sophomore season for junior college heavyweight John A. Logan College.
Congratulations to long-time Waubonsee Community College head basketball coach Dave Heiss who has now become the all-time victory leader in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference with 191 career coaching wins in league play.
Former Bremen high school star Andre Quarles is having a strong freshman year for Wabash Valley Junior College. Quarles, a blazing-quick 5-9 point guard, is averaging better than 10 points per game, and leading Wabash Valley in steals. Last year, as a high school senior, Quarles distinguished himself as one of the top Class of 2007 basketball prospects in the state of Illinois.
Ray McCallum of the Indiana University continuing to maintain a strong prescence in the state of Illinois for the Hoosier basketball program. The Indiana roster already includes Jamarcus Ellis (Chicago Westinghouse), DeAndre Thomas (Chicago Westinghouse) and Brandon McGee (Chicago Crane). Next year they will add 6-3 sharpshooter Matt Roth of Washington.
John Taylor of Chicago North Lawndale is real! Expect to hear a lot more about this Class of 2009 Gary Lew Wallace transfer who just became eligible to play for head coach Lewis Thorpe's squad.
Former Metamora High School star Blake Mishler, a 6-8 post who started his college career at East Tennessee State, has decided to transfer to Illinois State University as a walk-on. Mishler is currently a sophomore, and will have to sit out for one year per NCAA transfer guidelines.
Keep an eye out of the recruiting trail for University of Iowa assistant coach Lavall Jordan who is working overtime on the trail for the Hawkeyes. Iowa City is a very convenient 3 hour ride from Chicago.
