DePaul University has now jumped into the hunt for Class of 2010 Zion-Benton star Lenzelle Smith, Jr. of Team NLP. Clemson, Florida and Virginia are all also giving Smith, who has been stellar this spring, a very hard look.

Congratulations to 16-U Old Gold on winning the Bronze Division title this past weekend at the Adidas May Classic in Bloomington, Indiana.

Somehow. Some way. Larry Butler always finds a way to get it done with the Illinois Warriors. You have to give L.B. his props for guiding the Warriors to a runner-up finish at the Real Deal on the Hill, and to the championship at the Sabes (Howard Pulley) Invitational this spring.

Very quietly, Class of 2009 Chicago North Lawndale star John Taylor has been more than solid running the point for the SYF Players.

The field of teams is quickly rounding out for the Chicago Summer Classic presented by ChicagoHoops.com which is set for July 9-11 in Deerfield, Illinois, and is "live" for Division I coaches to attend. Better than 150 teams are expected for this year's event, and space is moving fast.

Look for one of the great battles on the basketball court during the 2008-09 season to be in the Chicago Catholic League with Chicago St. Rita star Terry Johnson, and Chicago Hales Franciscan star D.J. Cooper locking up. Both are stellar point guards and fierce competitors, and will enter the season as co-favorites for top player honors in the CCL. Johnson competes on the travel team circuit with the Mac Irvin Fire, and Cooper plays for MeanStreets. If you didn't already know.........Johnson also happens to boast a 4.0 grade point average in the classroom.

Isaac Chew of Murray State University is top notch. Chew, who starred in high school in the Chicago Public League at Chicago Wells, is as good as it gets on the recruiting trail, and rising fast as a star in the coaching ranks.

Congratulations to Chicago Noble Street star Mathias Burns who has now signed to play his college basketball for Ashford University.

Southeastern Iowa Community College is looking to bounce back strong on the basketball court, and is making Chicago a major part of that strategy. They have signed former Bloom Township star Larry Dumas, who will be transferring in from Western Illinois. They have also inked Ardarius Simmons and Jeron Lee from Chicago Marshall. Assistant coach Jon Grzanich is spearheading the Chicago effort by the program.

This past weekend 164 Boys and Girls teams took the floor for the USSA Tournament at the Joy of the Game Sports Center in Deerfield. The event featured some great competition as the Illinois Kings, Velocity, Rising Stars 16 Gold and Kessel Heat all made the Final Four in the 17-U bracket. The Rising Stars Yellow, Rising Stars Blue, Team NLP and the Rockford Wildcats all made the Final Four in the 16-U Division. The girls action featured some great efforts by a number of programs including Full Package, Marty Dello Magic, Kessel Heat and the Quad Cities.

Chuck Demas has taken the reigns as the new head coach at Chicago Walter Payton, and is excited about the nucleas of his team that will feature 6-5 Chris Eversley, 6-4 James Gill and 6-1 Christian Byrd. Eversley and Byrd both performed well for the Chicago Demons over the weekend at the Sabes (Howard Pulley) Invitational. The Demons are the same program that produced former Chicago Von Steuben star Jeremie Simmons, who is now signed to play for Ohio State University.

Fresno State likes 6-7, Class of 2009 Chicago Whitney Young post Stan Brown.

New University of Indianapolis head coach Stan Gouard is a real good dude.

Class of 2009 Peoria Christian star Billy Molinari, son of Western Illinois head coach Jim Molinari, made a bold statement over the weekend with his ability to shoot the basketball. Molinari was lights out all weekend for the RBS All-Stars at the Sabes (Howard Pulley) Invitational including a game where he nailed 7 three-point baskets.

Class of 2009 Fenwick star Mike Black, a 5-11 point guard, had a big weekend at the Adidas May Classic playing for the Chicago Rebels including a 28-point effort against the Indiana Southern Stars. The Rebels went 2-0 in pool play ahead of advancing to the Sweet 16 to finish the weekend with a 3-1 record. Erik Dornfield of Geneseo and Carey Cole of Chicago John Hope also had strong weekends.
