Coaching News Online presents Brian Stinnette's News And Notes From High School Basketball And The College Basketball Recruiting Trail
A big thank you to all of the Travel Teams, College Coaches and Staff that came together to make the 2nd Annual Chicago Summer Classic a tremendous success. Over the course of the three days of the event, better than 200 college coaches representing 115 different college basketball programs came through the doors. Next year should be even better! The Next Level Invitational in Milwaukee, the Reebok Proving Grounds, the Academic All-American Showcase and the Chicago Summer Classic all combine to make Chicago-Milwaukee a prime corridor for college recruiting during the highly important July Evaluation Period. It is a win-win situation for prospects and college recruiters alike. I was fortunate enough to speak to the competing prospects on opening day at both the Reebok Proving Grounds and the Academic All-American Showcase, and I could see the hunger in the eyes of the prospects to get the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of college programs. It is a fun time of the recruiting year.
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville head coach Lennox Forrester is a real good dude, and has the SIU-E recently elevated program on the fast track for Division I success. Forrester is a true class act.
Keep a close eye out for 6'9" Class of 2009 St. Joseph High School standout Louis Green. A strong and physical player inside, Green is one of the most improved post prospects in his class. Illinois-Chicago has taken notice.
Look for Arizona State to jump in and begin to make a strong push for 6'6" Class of 2010 New Trier star Alex Rossi of the 16-U Rising Stars Gold. Rossi, who brings size and an ability to knock down shots with range, caught their attention at the Chicago Summer Classic, and can be expected to also be on hand this week in Orlando, Florida to continue tracking him.
Loyola University head coach Jim Whitesell and assistant coach Pat Baldwin are both real good dudes! Both have logged more than their fair share of miles thus far during the July Evaluation Period.
Add Drake University of the Missouri Valley Conference to the long list of schools that have offered a scholarship to Class of 2009 Seton Academy star Tony Nixon of the 17-U Mac Irvin Fire.
Class of 2009 Waukegan star Colin Nickerson of Team NLP greatly enhanced his recruiting stock with a strong showing at the Chicago Summer Classic. Pay very close attention to Waukegan High School this year. Nickerson and Illinois-bound Jereme Richmond are going to form one of the best duo's in the state of Illinois.
Hey folks, Class of 2010 Chicago Foreman star Mike McCall of Chicago Elite has serious game! McCall, has a super-quick first step, a strong handle and a soft touch of his jumper. He is one of the fastest players that you will see with the basketball in his hands. Give him the basketball and let him go!
Look for Wichita State, and star assistant coach Chris Jans to greatly step up their recruiting efforts in the state of Illinois.
Class of 2009 Windy City Spartans point guard Mike Black of Fenwick is good. Really, really good!
6'6" Class of 2011 Chicago Whitney Young star Sam Thompson has a scholarship offer on the table from Oregon State University.
6'6" Class of 2009 Chicago Walter Payton star Chris Eversely, of the Chicago Demons, who happens to be a stellar student in the classroom, has a scholarship offer on the table from Wright State. Eversely was highly tracked by Division I programs at the Chicago Summer Classic.
6'7" Class of 2010 post Rob Wennington of the 16-U Illinois Wolves is a player to keep a close eye on over the course of the next year. Wennington is a strong and physical interior banger who has made great strides with his game over the course of the past six months.
Allen Major of Ohio State University is a real good dude.
The First Step backcourt duo of Khameron Harper and Gerald Dorsey is stellar. Add Rob Robinson making things happen inside and outside, Jarron Charles in the paint, and Kyle Maggio's shooting, and you have the backbone of First Step's success on the basketball court.
You are going to hear a lot about Class of 2010 standout Eric Gaines or Orange Crush at Hillcrest High School this year.
Look for 6'5" jumping jack Vincent Garrett of the 16-U Mac Irvin Fire to emerge as a big time player this year at Chicago Marshall.
You will hear a lot about star 6'2" Class of 2010 Chicago Marist point guard Nick Valla of the Illinois Kings over the next couple of years.
