Brian Stinnette's News and Notes From The World Of High School Basketball and College Basketball Recruiting
Brian Stinnette January 29, 2007 Email Questions/Comments To brian@chicagohoops.com Northwestern has been quite busy on the recruiting trail in the state of Illinois of late. They were in attendance at the Geneseo and Sterling High School contest last week to check out both 6-7 Class of 2008 standout Tyler Storm of Geneseo, and 6-3 Class of 2009 standout Joseph Bertand of Sterling. They have also picked up on the recruiting trail of 6-2 Class of 2008 Washington High School sharpshooter Matt Roth. Class of 2008 Hersey High School star Luke Fabrizius was on campus for a game last week as well. Indiana-bound Jamarcus Ellis, 6-8 DeAndre Thomas, 6-6 Johnnie Harris and 6-4 Mario Little are all doing quite well playing for head coach Greg Heiar, and Chipola Junior College. Chipola is now ranked #3 nationally. 6-1 Chicago Foreman freshman point guard Lavonte Dority is going to be a big time player! Former Barrington High School basketball star Jason Richards, now starring for Davidson, currently ranks second in the country in assists with an average of 7.9 assists per contest. Richards is also averaging 14 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest. Former Chicago Hyde Park star Stefhon Hannah of Missouri, and former Hillcrest star Jerel McNeal of Marquette are both tied for third in the country in steals with both averaging 3.1 steals per contest. Illinois State University, Head coach Porter Moser, and his "power staff" are starting to reap the benefits of their strong efforts on the recruiting trail. Former Chicago Phillips High School standout Osiris Eldrige has established himself as a bona fide star as a freshman. His efforts this season have included dropping 8 3-pointers in a game at Creighton. Moser's staff includes Chris Jans, who was the head coach at Chipola Junior College when the Chicago-to-Chipola pipeline started. Brian Barone, a fast-riser who's dad is the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, and Danyale Robinson, who has established himself as a force to be reckoned with on the recruiting trail. Chicago State and Lewis University are both among the schools actively pursuing Class of 2007 Chicago Von Steuben point guard Michael Horton. 6-7 John Shurna of Glenbard West High School has rolled his red-hot fall into a red-hot junior season on the basketball court. Shurna went for 24 points and 17 rebounds against Oak Park-River Forest this past weekend. This fall he was the MVP of the Joy of the Game Fall Exposure League which was presented by ChicagoHoops.com. Benjy Taylor and Tulane University are poised to make another recruiting push in the state of Illinois. Tulane competes in Conference USA. Class of 2009 Chicago Hales Franciscan point guard D.J. Cooper has turned his game up a notch over the course of the past few weeks. The 5-8 Cooper has the ability to beat opponents with his passing, his jumper or driving to the hole. A player to watch over the next few seasons. East St. Louis is rolling strong right now with an 18-game winning streak. Darian Sain and Anthony Mitchell are a pair of players capable of putting up a lot of points in a hurry. The team also recently picked up an added boost with the addition of 6-6 junior Brandon Harold who brings even more depth to a red-hot basketball team. Northern Illinois University assistant coach Carl Armato was front center checking out all of the action on Saturday night at the High School Hoops Showdown in Hoffman Estates. Notre Dame recently hosted Class of 2008 Oak Park-River Forest star Iman Shumpert on campus for an Unofficial Visit. Keep an eye out for 6-1 freshman Ben Brust of Hersey High School. Brust, who ranks as one of the top Class of 2010 basketball prospects in the state of Illinois, recently got moved up to varsity after a series of four consecutive 30+ games on the junior varsity level. He is easily one of the top shooters in the 2010 class. 6-5 Loyola Academy freshman Chancellor Carter made the trek to the University of Iowa for an Unofficial Visit to take in the Iowa/Wisconsin game over the weekend. Not to be outdone, Thornton High School has a trio of freshman that will be heard from over the next four years in Reggie Smith, Raymond Hines and Dennis Crisler. 6-1 senior point guard Richie Walker of Chicago Bogan can flat out play. |
