6'7" Former Chicago Senn Star Byron Pickens Of Juco Heavyweight Mineral Area (MO) College In Position For Big Sophomore Season, Drawing Solid Division I Interest
Former Chicago Senn High School star Byron Pickens of juco heavyweight Mineral Area (MO) College is in position for a big sophomore season, and has caught the attention of a steady stream of Division I basketball programs that are jockeying for position to land his services.
Pickens, a lean, wiry and strong 6'7" post, is a player who is known for his athleticism and his ability to run the floor. Pickens is extremely quick off the floor which gives him plus skills as both a rebounder, and as a shot-blocker. He is a player who loves to attack the offensive glass, and always gives a 100% effort on the basketball court.
Pickens is beginning to diversify game on the basketball court, and has improved both his handle, and his shooting ability, which will allow him to pull opposing posts away from the basket.
Pickens said, "I am trying to use my athletic ability to the fullest." He also noted that getting down to the National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas is a major priority for the team, and that the team is coming together nicely and jelling.
Pickens, who originally committed to Illinois-Chicago out of high school, is again being recruited by Illinois-Chicago in addition to Tennesse Tech, Stephen F. Austin, Cal State-Northridge, Cleveland State and Chicago State.
Mineral Area features a host of former Illinois high school stars including Pickens, DePaul-bound Mike Stovall (Chicago Marshall), Lewis-bound Brandon Hall (Chicago Simeon), Sean Scott (Chicago Farragut), Carlton Guyton (Rich South) and Al Rapier (Chicago Perspectives). Later this month, they will play a showdown game against Chipola (FL) College, which this year features Darrell Williams (Chicago Dunbar), Kaleb Wright (Eisenhower) and Darius Stowers (Chicago Farragut).
