Defending IHSA Class 3A state champion Champaign Centennial will not have an easy route in their bid to repeat as 3A state champs. Centennial must get past Hillcrest tomorrow afternoon if they are to play for the state crown on Saturday.

Centennial defeated Hillcrest 81-64 back in February with Mr. Basketball candidate Rayvonte Rice (Drake) leading the way with 34 points. That game was played in Champaign. This time, a trip to the 3A state championship game is on the line, and Hillcrest will be looking to learn from their first meeting, and will seek to better contain Rice.

The Centennial/Hillcrest winner face the Peoria Richwoods/Chicago Marshall winner on Saturday afternoon for the Class 3A title. Richwoods is the only team to defeat Champaign Centennial this season which ended a string of 37 straight wins by Centennial. Chicago Marshall won the state title in 2008, and returns to the state finals with another wealth of talent.

Centennial currently boasts a record of 63-2 over the past two seasons combined, and would like nothing better than to close out their incredible two year run with a second state championship.
