As of now, Class of 2009 Schaumburg star Cully Payne remains committed to the University of Alabama despite the resignation of head coach Mark Gottfried. Payne has a great deal of respect for coach Gottfried, and maintains a close relationship with him.

Payne, a 6'1" point guard, is enjoying stellar senior season on the hardwood. Until being sidelined by a back injury, Payne had positioned himself among a handful of candidates for Illinois Mr. Basketball consideration. Payne's terrific season has included leading Schaumburg to a runner-up finish at the loaded Pontiac Holiday Basketball Tournament.

Mike Weinstein, who coached Payne on the travel team circuit with the Rising Stars, confirmed to ChicagoHoops.com that as of right now, Cully Payne remains committed to the University of Alabama. Weinstein did note that Payne will at some point re-evaluate exactly where he stands in terms of his college commitment to Alabama in light of the fact that coach Gottfried, with whom he has a close relationship, has resigned.

Payne signed a National Letter of Intent to Alabama last November during the early signing period.

Weinstein went on to note that Payne is completely focused presently on getting healthy, and making a return to the basketball court, so he can do all that he can to help get Schaumburg downstate in the IHSA state tournament.

Payne is currently sidelined with a small stress fracture to a vertebrae in his back. The injury will completely heal itself with rest. Payne is currently resting his back, and eagerly awaiting being medically cleared to return to action for Schaumburg.
