Extra Early Look: 2008-09 Preaseason Top 5 High School Teams Regardless Of Class Affiliation
Four new basketball state champions have now been crowned, and the jockeying can now begin for 2008-09. Here is a look at how the early preseason rankings could look for the state of Illinois next year without regard to high school class affiliation.
1. Zion-Benton
The Class 4A state runner-up will return 6-3 Lenzelle Smith, 6-7 Markus Yarbrough, point guard Ron Steward and Quintrell Love. Great team chemistry.
2. Chicago North Lawndale
Just about everyone returns for the Class 2A state champions. 6-10 Paul Bunch and 6-5 Jon Mills are a dynamic frontcourt capable of dominating on both ends of the floor. Mills is the best rebounder in the state. John Taylor is a major offensive weapon.
3. Chicago Whitney Young
Will return a star-studded roster that will be hungry for a state title. 6-3 Marcus Jordan, 6-3 Chris Colvin, 6-7 Stan Brown, 6-3 Anthony Johnson and 5-8 Ahmad Starks are all back for the Dolphins.
4. Thornton
Team will bring back a great deal of talent and energy. Reggie Smith, Jay Parker, Jamal Gray, Trevell Rivers and Richie Thompson will all be back for Thornton.
5. Chicago Marshall
The Class 3A state champions will return do-it-all guard Darius Smith, and do-it-all forward Eriq Harris and will again be among the Class 3A favorites to win it all.
