Chris McClellan Of Wheeling Goes Off For 33 Points To Lead The Grizzlies To Victory, Meanwhile Illinois-Bound Jereme Richmond, Lenzelle Smith And The Suns Hang On For Thrilling A 1-Point Win
Chris McClellan (Wheeling) scored 33 points, and Ryan Shelton (Rockford Harlem) added 20 points inside to lead the Grizzlies to a 83-74 comeback win over the Clippers. Meanwhile Illinois-bound Jereme Richmond (Waukegan), Lenzelle Smith (Zion-Benton) and the Suns held on for a thrilling 76-75 win over Markus Yarbrough (Zion-Benton), Rodney Clinkscales (Zion-Benton) and the Rockets.
The Grizzlies trailed the Clippers by double-digits for much of their contest. However, McClellan, a 5-11 Class of 2008 point guard, heated up both with his jumper and drives to the hole to fuel his team to victory. He was backed up by a strong showing by Shelton who did most of his damage inside. Tommy Sotos added 17 points for the winners. The Clippers were led by Mike Bumber with 21 points and Alex Turnowcnyk who added 18 points.
The Suns came charging out of the gate against the Rockets in a game that appeared to be headed toward a blowout ahead of the Lakers mounting a furious first half rally. With Markus Yarbrough taking care of business inside, and Rodney Clinkscales roaming the perimeter, the Rockets led at the break. The game went back and forth in the second half with Richmond dazzling with his passing, jump shot and drives to the hole. Backed up by Lenzelle Smith and Ron Steward (Zion-Benton), Richmond and the Suns were able to hang on for the 76-75 victory.
Cory Hrynyk (Bartlett) scored 21 points, and DePaul-bound Cully Payne (Schaumburg) scored 14 points, and set his teammates up for easy buckets with his passing all day long to lead the Hornets to a 74-63 win over the Blazers. John Kinsler scored 19 points to lead the Blazers with Nik Garcia (Niles West) adding 14 points and Jack Cooley (Glenbrook South) chipping in 10 points.
In other action, Albany-bound Jake Lindfors scored 25 points while his teammate, SIU-Edwardsville-bound Kevin Stineman added 11 points and a bevy of assists to lead the Spurs to a hardfought 58-50 win over the Mavs. Tony Nixon (Seton Academy) led the Mavs with 13 points with Joe Jones adding 11 points. The Raptors topped the Sonics 54-38 with Al Cherry leading the way with 13 points and Craig Burton and Lakheem Trotter each scoring 10 points. 6-10 Jordan Threloff (DeKalb) led the Sonics with 11 points.
The Kings used a highly balanced attack to top the Jazz 70-66 with Mark Tometich leading the way with 13 points, Paul Williams scoring 11 points and Paul Tometich adding 8 points. Tyrone Allen (Homewood-Flossmoor) led the Jazz with 20 points with Josh Evans adding 12 points.
The Warriors got a dynamic 28-point effort from Navjot Singh (Mundelein) and 22 long range points from Ben Brust (Mundelein) to head off a 22-point effort from Cornell-bound Chris Wroblewski (Highland Park) as the Warriors topped the Nuggets 97-68. Meanwhile, Brad Johnstin poured in 20 points, Trey Williams scored 16 points and Freddie Taylor added 11 points as the Wolves knocked off the Lakers 72-59. Issa Avery led the Lakers with 21 points while Jon Patino added 18 points for the Lakers.
In Freshman/Sophomore action, The Pacers defeated the Wizards 53-50 in an action-packed contest. With the Pacers leading 49-48 late in the game, a steal and a John King bucket put the Wizards ahead 50-49. However, D'Wayne Brantley then scored on the next possession to put the Pacers back on top, and a late bucket sealed the 53-50 comeback win. The Pacers were led by Brantley with 18 points, and Tim Hill who added 15 points. Brion Wood led the Wizards with 12 points.
Dylan Bartuch drilled 26 points to lead the Bucks past the Hawks 57-41. Paul Williams led the Hawks with 14 points. Jack Ryan and Justin Wasik each scored 16 points to lead the Celtics past the Sixers 66-37. Devin Powell led the way for the Sixers with 14 points. Ramson Yountham scored 14 points and Nick Komp added 11 points as the Knicks defeated the Bobcats 57-48. Ben Levine led the Bobcats with 16 points while Connor Boehm added 10 points.
Rodney Metellus and Martell Moore each scored 21 points to power the Bulls to a 79-55 win over the Pistons. The Pistons were led by Marquise Thomas with 13 points and Michael Mache with 11 points. Reggie Greenwood scored 12 points and Ruben Williams added 11 points as the Nets topped the Heat 69-43. The Heat were led by Matt Palucki who scored 11 points. The Magic powered their way past the Cavs 75-51. Lou Adsida led the Magic with 20 points to offset a 20-point effort from Matthew Gumbinger of the Cavs.
