Phillip "Mickey" Perry of Proviso East High School brings the first installment of his player diary to ChicagoHoops.com. Phillip ranks as one of the top Class of 2005 basketball prospects in the state of Illinois, and will bring us a special look inside his recruitment, and his life on and off of the basketball court.

I would like to start my diary by thanking God for giving me my mother, Lavaller Rodgers, and also my brother Timothy, and my sister Michelle. They mean the world to me.

I would also like to thank Larry Butler, my AAU coach with the Illinois Warriors, for giving me the opportunity to showcase my skills on a national level. It has been a great spring already. We have travelled to Virgina to play in the Boo Williams Invitational, to Houston for the Kingwood Classic, to Fort Wayne, Indiana for the Spiece Run-N-Slam and to Bloomington, Indiana for the Adidas May Classic.

I recently visited the University of Wisconsin, and had a really great time. The campus was beautiful, and they went all out to make me feel right at home. They posted a big welcome to me and my family on the scoreboard. My mom really liked it there. What I liked the most is the way both Coach Bo Ryan, and Coach Rob Jeter talked to me on a personal level. They spent time getting to know me as a person, rather than me as just a basketball player, which I really liked.

I am in the Honors Program at Proviso East, so it is very important for me to manage my time wisely with school, basketball and travelling. I have gotten used to it though, and I think it will definetely help me in the future.

Right now, I am working out in the weightroom three times a week. I have a personal trainer, and I do what is called an Olympic Workout. My workouts are geared toward adding definition to my body, and I am really beginning to see the results. I am also pounding the protein shakes. I drink one in morning, and one at night on top of my meals.

Of course, I am always working on my game. I am shooting anywhere from 200-300 shots per day, and playing every chance I get. Recently, the competition in pick-up games has been great. We almost had to start selling tickets! Shannon Brown (Michigan State), Steve Hunter (Orlando Magic), Cedrick Banks (UIC MVP), Dennis Trammel (Ball State MVP), Charles Richardson (Nebraska) and others have all been playing. It has been great for me because I like to study other players, and add a little bit from everybody to my game.

Well thats all for now. I will be back with another update in a couple of weeks.
