Player Diary: Phillip Perry Of Proviso East
Phillip Perry (Proviso East) Brian Stinnette Special To ChicagoHoops.com June 4, 2004 Email Questions/Comments To brian@chicagohoops.com Phillip "Mickey" Perry of Proviso East High School brings the second installment of his player diary to ChicagoHoops.com. Brandon ranks as one of the top Class of 2005 basketball prospects in the state of Illinois, and will bring us a special look inside his recruitment, and his life on and off of the basketball court. It has been a pretty good couple of weeks since I started writing my diary for ChicagoHoops.com. I was in New Orleans last weekend playing in the Nike Memorial Day Classic with the Illinois Warriors. We had a good tournament as we made it all the way to the semifinals. We lost to a team from Memphis that eventually won the whole thing. Man, a lot more of the teams knew who I was in New Orleans. When I came into the game, the teams really came after me! It was alright though, rather than focusing on scoring, I penetrated, drew defenders to me, and utilized my vision and passing skills to find open teammates. I did a lot of creating for both Jon Scheyer and Jamar Smith. Coach Butler told me that he was really pleased with my unselfishness. All in all, I loved the experience in New Orleans. The city was beautiful, and my thigh injury was feeling much better. I wish we could have won the tournament, but I still feel very good about the whole experience both on, and off of the basketball court. This weekend, I will be playing in the Riverside-Brookfield Shootout with my high school team, Proviso East. I am very excited about it. I really like our team this year. Our big man, 6-10 Brian Carlwell, is really playing well. His confidence is sky high right now! Defenses are now starting to collapse on him when he gets the ball inside, which opens up a lot of things on the floor for me and my teammates. We are loaded though with Me, Brian, Jeremiah Wise, Marcus Scott and Sergio Brown. I am now going to start running and lifting weights at 5am. My schedule is very hectic over the summer. Starting early allows me to do everything that I need to do, and then still have plenty of time to relax for games. My old high school teammates Dee Brown (Illinois), Charles Richardson (Nebraska) and Shannon Brown (Michigan State) all showed me some defensive tricks that they have learned in college. I like taking a part of everybody else's game an incorporating it into mine. Whenever I can, I work out with the Chi-Town Mixers. Coach Jeff Lundeen has been great. I will be playing with Proviso East a lot during the month of June. We are playing in the Illinois and Norther Iowa Team Camps, th Oak Park Summer League and also the Hinsdale South, Prairie Ridge, St. Pat's and Heartland Shootouts. I am hearing from more schools. Miami and Nebraska are now showing strong interest, and DePaul has also stepped it up. My guy Tracey Webster has now moved over the University of Illinois as an assistant coach, and I still have the University of Wisconsin recruiting me. My visit to Wisconsin was great. I want to give a shout out to Kenyale Evans (Chicago Morgan Park), he is one of my closest friends on the Illinois Warriors. I also want to give a shout to Marcus Scott, Jeff Cline, Sidney White and the entire Proviso East team. I also want to tell my mother that I love her, and i appreciate all that she does for me. Until next time, Phillip Perry Proviso East High School. 1st Installment of Phillip Perry's Diary |
