Team Notebook From The 2008 Bill Hensley Memorial Spiece Run N' Slam
Head coach Al Montgomery's Team NLP-AM put up a superb effort at the Spiece Run N' Slam. Despite playing without Ron Steward, Keith Ford, DeShawn Chambliss and Quintrell Love, the team went 2-1 in pool play, and advanced to the 17-U Gold Division Tournament ahead of falling to DeShaun Thomas, and tournament runner-up Spiece Indy Heat. In that game, they trailed by just one point early in the second half ahead of ultimately losing the game. Jordan Harris (Oswego) led the way for the team, which featured a number of 2009 prospects playing up. Trammell Weathersby (East Aurora), Steve Walker (Chicago Simeon), Brandon Coombs (Lake Zurich), Jake Anderson (Warren), Aaron Mongtomery (Warren), Kristol Jackson (Chicago Simeon) and Ryan Montgomery (Warren) all put up stellar efforts for the team.
Steve Harvey's 15-U Peoria Carver team continues to be nothing short of highly impressive on the basketball court. Led by Class of 2011 Limestone star Donivine Stewart, this team has the ability to beat teams in a variety of ways. 6-5 Andrew Jordan (Peoria Woodruff) is a force on both ends of the floor. 6-5 Brandon Watson (Peoria Manual) is a force inside. Travis Kellum (Peoria Central) makes things happen both inside and outside. Meanwhile, Trae Dorsey (Peoria Woodruff) and Cooper Meyer (Peoria Christian) both can light it up from long range. 6-2 Darren White (Peoria Central) can also really play.
Congratulations again to head coach Nick Irvin and the 17-U Mac Irvin Fire on their impressive run to the championship at the event. The Fire features a roster that is not only highly talented, but also very deep. They took home the title despite playing without Class of 2010 star Crandall Head (Rich South) and Class of 2009 star Zeke Upshaw (Chicago Lab). Not bad at all.
Class of 2009 standout Jamal Gray (Thornton) of MeanStreets was strong on both ends of the floor for Tai Streets squad. Gray always brings fire and intensity.
The Illinois Bobcats had a great weekend at Spiece and were led by their bruising and athletic forward duo of 6-6 Mike Haynes and Jeronne Maymon. Haynes and Maymon, who hails from Madison, Wisconsin and is one of the top 2009 prospects in the country, punished opponents all weekend long. The Bobcats biggest win came in the tournament when they topped 6-8 Miami-bound Donnovan Kirk and 6-9 Michigan State-bound Derrick Nix and The Family in overtime.
The Illinois Speed continue to impress on the basketball court with their hardnosed play and intensity on the basketball court. These guys are coming fast.
Kentrell King (Crete-Monee) has stepped up big, and has been outstanding for the 16-U Mac Irvin Fire with Jay Parker (Thornton) out with an injury. King, who was the starting point guard for Crete as a freshman this past season, is yet another Illinois Class of 2011 prospect that appears to be well on his way to being an outstanding prospect.
Very quietly, 6-7 Mike Gabriel (Chicago Lincoln Park) of the 16-U Rising Stars Blue team, is having a stellar spring, and continuing to establish himself as one of the better 2010 post prospects in the state of Illinois. Demarko Nash (Chicago Lincoln Park), Richard McGlothlin and Aric Dickerson (Chicago Lincoln Park) are also major contributors for the squad.
Congratulations to the 15-U Chicago Express team on their Silver Division Championship Run at the event.
The 16-U Rising Stars Yellow team, led by Mitch Hopfinger (Lake Forest) and Mike Springs (Waukegan) and Craig Burton (Warren), capped off a strong weekend by rolling into the 16-U Gold Division tournament, and knocking off a solid Spiece Gym Rats 2010 team. These guys go at 100% all the time on the basketball court.
The 15-U Peoria Irish team was impressive in advancing all the way to the Sweet 16 of the Gold Division Tournament. The team was led by Mark Gilchrese (Springfield), who nearly sparked a comeback win in the Sweet 16 against Spiece Mo/Kan, Hayden Hoerdemann (Bloomington Central Catholic), Jordan Nelson (Lincoln) and D.J. Gillespie (Normal Community). Keep an eye out for 6-9 developing post Tyler Tarrence (Midland). These guys are going to make a lot of noise this spring and summer.
Illinois Old School is also a program that is quickly garnering a great deal of respect with their solid fundamental play, and their all-out effort on both ends of the basketball court.
