Illinois Warriors Top Chicago Ferrari In A Double Overtime Thriller In 17-U SuperShowcase Quarterfinals
Brian Stinnette July 26, 2005 Email Questions/Comments To brian@chicagohoops.com In an intense battle between a pair of Illinois AAU basketball titans, the Illinois Warriors topped Chicago Ferrari in double overtime in the quarterfinals of the 17-U SuperShowcase in Orlando, Florida. Jon Scheyer (Glenbrook North) sank a three-pointer with 3 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime #1. College coaches packed the gym, and the two squads didn't disappoint. The Warriors opened the game with a 9-0 run, and led 20-7 early before Darien McKinstrey (Chicago Hales Franciscan) ignited a Ferrari run to close the gap. The Warriors led 44-39 after three quarters, and then the game got interesting. Kijuane Leach (Chicago Leo) dropped a bucket, and got fouled to give Ferrari a 47-46 lead with 6 minutes to play. Ferrari led by two with a minute to play when Manual Cass (Carbondale) sank two free throws to tie the game. A McKinstrey steal triggered a late Ferrari run to a three-point lead. Jon Scheyer then went to work, and created enough space to launch, and drop a three-point basket with 3 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Jeremy Nash (Chicago Marist) hit a three in the 1st overtime to give Ferrari a three-point cushion. Scheyer then dropped another three to tie the game with 1:07 left. Scheyer later added two free throws to give the Warriors a two point edge. Jerome Randle (Chicago Hales Franciscan) tied the game with 20 seconds to play on a pair of free throws. Scheyer missed a short runner to send the game to overtime #2. A Cole Holmstrom (Bloomington, IN) three, and a Manual Cass put back and free throw put the Warriors up six. Randle then again went to work with a three of his own, and then another bucket to bring Ferrari within one point. The Warriors closed out the game at the free throw line to record a thrilling 85-80 victory. Scheyer led the Warriors in scoring with 27 points. Jeff Ryan (Glenbrook South) hit tough shots throughout the game for the Warriors. Cass, Don Lawson (Chicago Leo) and Bill Cole (Peoria Richwoods) did a nice job battling inside. Josh Parker (Thornton) and Aaron Johnson (Chicago Hubbbard) had the tough task of trying to slow down Randle. Randle very quietly led all scorers with 32 points. Randle dropped 4 three-pointers, 6 baskets inside the arc and hit all 8 of his free throws. McKinstrey and Leach each scored 14 points, and Demond Watt (Thornton Fractional North) chipped in 12. Watt did his damage to keep Ferrari in the game early, while McKinstrey and Leach provided a big part of their offense during huge stretches in the 3rd and 4th quarters. |
