Class of 2011 Chicago Whitney Young star Sam Thompson of the Mac Irvin Fire has given a verbal commitment to play his college basketball for head coach Thad Matta, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Thompson ranks as one of the top Class of 2011 prospects in the country.

Thompson, a 6'7" guard/forward, is most known for his stunning athleticism. Thompson is at his best in up-tempo environments when he can get out and run the floor. Thompson is set to take over as the leader of a Whitney Young team that is again loaded, and again among the best in the state of Illinois.

"Sam Thompson is a gifted athlete who is easily one of the best players in the country. Sam was slowed by injuries this season, so everyone did not get an opportunity to see just how talented he is," said Mike Irvin of the Mac Irvin Fire. Irvin also gave special mention of Ron "Chin" Coleman, who coaches both for Mac Irvin, and also Whitney Young, for the work that he has done with Thompson over the past several years.

Ohio State continues to have tremendous recruiting success in Chicago with Thompson now set to join a program that used to feature Evan Turner (St. Joseph), and currently features Lenzelle Smith, Jr. (Zion-Benton).
