Chicago Whitney Young star Sam Thompson, who rates as one of the top Class of 2011 prospects in the country, has been busy making campus visits this fall, and this past weekend he enjoyed a strong visit to the campus of Oregon State University.

Thompson, a 6'7" wing, is an explosive athlete, and excels both in the classroom, and also on the basketball court. Thompson enjoyed his visit to the west coast, and his opportunity to get more familiar with Oregon State University. Thompson said, "The Oregon State visit went really well. I liked the campus, the coaching staff, and enjoyed the players on the visit. They are definitely an up and coming program in the Pac-10, and also on the west coast.”

Thompson has long known Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson, but is still focused on considering each school, and coaching staff on an equal level. “I have a good relationship with the coaching staff without a doubt. They were one of the first schools to really get into recruiting me, so I feel I know them well. I look at him (Coach Robinson) the same way that I do every other coach. I do not view him differently because of my relationship with him as a child, or because of his relationship with President Obama. I still have to make an educated decision based on how well I feel I will succeed,” said Thompson.

Thompson does not have a leader, and is still working his way through the recruiting process. Thompson said, “I don’t have a leader right now. I’m feeling the process out myself. Ohio State, Florida, Oregon State, Illinois and Kansas are my top five in no particular order.”

Thompson will also likely still make more visits during the course of the upcoming year. “I will go see a Kansas game at some point during the year, and I will also try to get to down to Illinois,” noted Thompson.

Thompson is now 100% healthy, will miss no time at the start of the year, and is very much looking forward to the coming high school season as Whitney Young looks to defend their IHSA Class 4A state title. Thompson said, “I’m really excited about the season. We have a chance to finish the season at the top once again, so it will be a fun ride.”
