Curie Looms As Spoiler To Proviso East’s Title Hopes
Chicago Hoops February 5, 2003 The last time Proviso East won the Illinois state championship was back in 1992. This year’s team, led by Shannon Brown, has lost just once this season. However, red-hot Chicago Curie looms in the Proviso West Sectional as a potential spoiler to the Pirates state title hopes. Currently, Proviso East is 18-1 and ranked #5 in the state of Illinois. They have played games in Kentucky and Ohio. Their brutal schedule this season includes just six home games. East has spent the entire season preparing itself to make a title run. Lurking as a spoiler in the Proviso West Sectional is Chicago Curie. Curie is currently 21-5, and has won 17 of its last 18 games. Curie’s only loss during that span was to Chicago Crane, the #3 ranked team in the state. Should they meet, Curie has the potential to give Proviso East fits. They are extremely well coached, and equally comfortable playing a half court or up-tempo game. Curie is both deep and balanced. Guards Eric Borg, Gabriel Taylor and Mekiel Posey all can shoot with range. Big men Cliff Manning, Mario Brandon and Jonte Johnson bang and score points inside. To take out Curie, East will need contributions from all of their big guns. Shannon Brown (Michigan State), Charles Richardson (Nebraska) and Ronnie Carlwell (Illinois State) will be tested. If East wins the Proviso West Sectional, it will be a well earned crown. |
