Leitao Lands Superb First Class

November 20, 2002

Dave Leitao was known as a top notch recruiter while serving under Jim Calhoun at Connecticut. He has done nothing to tarnish that reputation after putting together a superb group of recruits for his first recruiting class at DePaul.

Leitao has secured commitments from 6’2 guard Tyler Smith, 6’6 swingman Sammy Mejia, 6’8 forward Lorenzo Thompson, 6’7 forward Marcus Heard and 6’10 center Wesley Green.

Smith and Mejia are both prep schoolers from the east coast. While Thompson and Heard both hail from the state of Illinois. Wesley Green will come to DePaul via the state of Florida.

All five of DePaul’s 2003 recruits rank among the top 150 prospects nationally. Equally important, is the fact that all five can be expected to stay on campus for a few years. Pat Kennedy lost Quentin Richardson, Bobby Simmons and Steven Hunter early to the NBA. Eddy Curry, another DePaul recruit, went to the NBA before ever making it to campus.

When all is said and done DePaul’s class should rank among the top 15-20 nationally. That will go a long way toward sending a message to the rest of Conference USA that DePaul will not only be back, but will be very strong in the near future.
