Peoria Freshman Point Guard Alphonso Dillard Looks Like A Future Star

Brian Stinnette
April 14, 2003

Alphonso Dillard, a freshman point guard at Peoria Manual High School, looks like he is going to be the next star player produced by the storied school.

Dillard, who stands 5-10, emerged as a key playmaker for Manuel late in the 2002-03 season. By all indications this spring, he is ready to step up, and become a star caliber player.

Dillard was extremely impressive running the point for the Downstate squad, in Sunday’s Illinois Select Showdown at Loyola University. He clearly made the players around him better.

The super-quick Dillard has an excellent handle on the basketball. He is an outstanding penetrator. Dillard is extremely difficult to guard one-on-one. He stays in the lane. His passing instincts are superb, and he knows how to finish when he gets to the rack. His jump shot still needs work, but should come around in time.

Keep an eye out for Alphonso Dillard, he is a player you will hear a lot about over the next three years.
