Illinois State Gets Najeeb Echols

Chicago Hoops
January 16, 2003

Former Chicago high school basketball star Najeeb Echols has decided to transfer to Illinois State. Echols previously announced that he was leaving the University of Missouri.

Echols is a major recruiting coup for Illinois State. He is an extremely versatile player. At 6-7 he can play both guard and forward. While at Missouri, Echols did everything from playing power forward to running the offense as a point guard.

As a junior at Chicago’s Whitney Young high school, Echols averaged 25 points and 12 rebounds per game. Echols was ranked among the Top 50 players in the country as a senior even though he sat out the year with an injury.

Echols will be eligible to play for the Redbirds next January. He will have five semesters of eligibility remaining.
