DePaul’s Latest Recruit Showing Progress

Brian Stinnette
February 21, 2003

Aking Elting, who last week became DePaul’s first verbal commitment for the Class of 2004, is beginning to show real progress as a junior college freshman.

Elting, a 5-10 point guard, hails from Elizabethtown, North Carolina. He is currently a freshman at the University of Southern Idaho. USI is one of the top JUCO programs in the country. Last week, he ended his Division I recruitment early by selecting DePaul. Fresno State and Utah were also in hot pursuit of Elting.

Elting started slowly this year, but is now beginning to show flashes of some of the promise he displayed as one of the top point guards in the state of North Carolina as a high school senior.

For the season, Elting is averaging 4.9 points and 3.0 assists per game. He has made 2 starts this season, and averages about 16 minutes per game. Next season, Elting will move into the starting lineup, and his numbers are expected to double.

Coming out of high school, Elting was known as a stellar athlete. Although he is just 5-10 he is an excellent leaper, and can dunk with ease. He has a strong handle, and is an above average shooter.
