Illinois Could Crash The Party To Land Shaun Pruitt

Brian Stinnette
February 27, 2003

Now that he is back on the court, the recruitment for West Aurora’s Shaun Pruitt, one of the top 2004 prospects in the state of Illinois, is set to heat up. Quietly, the University of Illinois, could be ready to make a strong run at landing Pruitt.

Indiana, Marquette, Purdue and Xavier are among the list of schools that covet Pruitt’s services. Illinois has always been mentioned as a potential destination for Pruitt. However, it didn’t appear they would be a serious factor since they have 6-7 point guard Shaun Livingston, and 6-8 power forward Kalen Grimes locked on their radar screen.

The number of full rides available to Illinois for 2004 could increase in the near future. Mark Melvin of cutting edge hoops points out that prized 2003 recruit Charlie Villanueva could be headed to the NBA draft, and that freshman forward Kyle Wilson remains at home in Texas. With Pruitt, who is known to really like the Illinois program, the Illini could once again be positioned to sign a Top 10 recruiting class.

Pruitt is currently ranked the #3 prospect in the state of Illinois for the Class of 2004 by Chicago Hoops. The fact that he has held on to a Top 3 ranking despite being injured much of the year shows the type of ability Pruitt possesses.

Pruitt, a 6-8 power forward is a dazzling package of size and skill. The lefty can play both facing the basket, and with his back to the basket. He has a solid array of moves in the post, and can step out and accurately knock down mid-range jumpers. He is also a solid rebounder. Pruitt is a Top 50 player nationally.

Pruitt has been doing his homework. He has been on campus at Illinois, Indiana, Xavier, Purdue and Marquette. Indiana and Purdue are both working overtime to land Pruitt. Indiana is desperate to sign a quality big man after striking out last fall. Purdue meanwhile, is looking to add a second Top 50 player to it’s 2004 class. The Boilermakers have already secured a verbal from Robert Vaden, a 6-4 shooting guard from Indianapolis, who’s stock is soaring.
