Player Profile: Sammy Mejia

November 2002

6’6 swingman Sammy Mejia should provide DePaul fans with plenty to cheer about over the next four years.

The 190-pound Mejia comes to DePaul via Storm King Prep in Cornwall on the Hudson, New York. Last year, Mejia averaged 21 points and 7 rebounds per contest. This past summer, he headlined with Illinois recruit Charlie Villanueva on the AAU circuit with the Long Island Panthers.

Mejia’s biggest strength might be his versatility. He is a solid ballhandler capable of penetrating to the basket. He is an above average shooter with range out to the three-point arc. Mejia is equally comfortable playing with the ball in his hands, or playing off the ball. His size allows him to post up smaller players inside.

Depending on what the situation dictates, Mejia is capable of getting minutes at point guard, shooting guard or small forward. Right now Mejia is still a bit on the thin side. However, some time in weight room should make him more than ready to contribute as a freshman for DePaul next year.
