Moline Freshman Paul Bayer Has Star Potential

Brian Stinnette
June 10, 2003

Moline freshman guard Paul Bayer looks like he could be a future Illinois high school basketball star.

Bayer, a 6-4 shooting guard, averaged 9 points and 4 rebounds per game this past season at Moline. Bayer plays on the AAU circuit with the Illiois Gunners 17U squad.

Bayer told Chicago Hoops that he feels his ability to shoot the basketball is the strongest part of his game. He won the Regional 3-Point Shootout at Dixon, and the Sectional 3-Point Shootout at DeKalb.

This offseason Bayer is working especially hard to improve his ability to beat his man off of the dribble. Combining improved ballhandling, with his size and ability to shoot the basketball, will make Bayer an extremely dangerous offensive performer. Bayer is also working to improve his quickness and his overall strength.

With four starters returning from a team that finished 20-7 a year ago, Moline’s prospects for 2003-04 are looking very bright. Look to hear a lot more about Paul Bayer this season as he, and his backcourt mate Wesley McCorkle, combine to form one of the better guard duo’s in the state.
